Heat pump systems are usually the strongest option for energy efficiency; electric storage is simple and familiar; gas continuous-flow heats water on demand and can suit homes already connected to gas; and electric continuous-flow can suit selected applications where the electrical supply is adequate. How do I choose the right hot water system size for my household?

Household size is important, but it is not the only factor. For storage and heat pump systems, consider tank capacity, recovery rate, peak shower use, number of bathrooms and local climate. A system that is too small may run out of hot water, while an unnecessarily large system can cost more to buy and operate. Continuous-flow systems are sized by flow rate and the number of outlets likely to run together. Are heat pump hot water systems cheaper to run than electric storage?

Generally, yes. A heat pump uses a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat from the surrounding air into the water instead of relying mainly on a resistive heating element. Actual savings depend on your electricity tariff, household hot water use, climate, system settings, installation and whether you can run the unit during solar-generation or lower-cost tariff periods.

Can a heat pump hot water system work with my solar panels?

Yes, heat pump hot water can work very well with rooftop solar. Many modern systems include timers or scheduling so heating can be concentrated during daylight hours when your solar PV is generating. Some models offer more advanced controls. The exact solar functionality varies by product, so check the individual model's specifications rather than assuming every heat pump has direct solar integration.

What is the difference between 10A, 15A and 3-phase hot water systems?

The rating describes the electrical supply the system requires. Selected 10A heat pumps may be able to use a suitable compliant 10A circuit and outlet, while 15A models require an appropriate 15A supply. High-powered electric continuous-flow systems can require dedicated 3-phase power. Existing wiring, circuit capacity, isolation and installation requirements vary, so a licensed electrician must confirm whether your property and chosen model are suitable.

Are government rebates or incentives available for heat pump hot water systems?

Eligible heat pump systems may qualify for incentives such as Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) and state-based programs. In Victoria, eligible households and products may also qualify for Solar Victoria hot water rebates and/or Victorian Energy Upgrades incentives. Eligibility, rebate amounts and program rules can change and depend on the property, product, household, retailer and installer. Always confirm current eligibility before purchasing or arranging installation; a 'rebate eligible' product does not guarantee that every customer or installation will receive a rebate.

Are heat pump hot water systems noisy, and where should they be installed?

Good placement also requires suitable airflow, drainage, service access and the clearances specified by the manufacturer. Where practical, avoid positioning the unit immediately beside bedroom windows or areas where noise could disturb occupants or neighbours. Do heat pump hot water systems work in cold weather?

Many heat pump water heaters are designed to operate in cold Australian conditions, but performance and operating temperature limits vary by model.
