The best tile choice balances appearance, area suitability, maintenance and installation. This guide helps you compare the details that matter before you request a quote or place an order.

1. Match the tile to the surface

A product suitable for a wall is not automatically suitable for a floor, and indoor suitability does not confirm outdoor use. Begin with the intended location: floor, wall, bathroom or outdoor. Then check the specific product data and obtain installer confirmation.

2. Compare material and finish

Porcelain is widely selected for its dense body and versatility, while ceramic is often used on internal walls and selected floors where the product is rated accordingly. Natural stone has unique variation and may require sealing or specialist maintenance. Matt, textured, polished and grip finishes create different visual and practical outcomes; suitability is product-specific.

3. Choose the format with the room

Larger tiles can make a space feel calmer, but layout, cuts, substrate flatness and access must be considered. Smaller formats can follow detailed areas and introduce pattern. Ask your installer to plan set-out around doorways, wastes, niches and visible edges before the material is fixed.

4. Understand coverage and ordering

Tile prices may be shown per square metre, per box or per piece. Check the stated price basis and coverage per box on the product page. Measure the tiled area, add the agreed allowance for cuts, pattern matching and breakage, then round up to full boxes. A common starting allowance is 10%, but complex layouts may need more—confirm the final quantity with your installer.

5. Order samples and check the batch

Screen colour is only a guide. View a physical sample in the actual space and under different lighting. Shade, tone, calibre and surface character can vary between production batches, and samples are indicative. Where consistency matters, confirm the full required quantity so stock can be supplied from one batch where available.

6. Plan the complete installation

• Confirm substrate preparation, waterproofing and falls where relevant.
• Select appropriate adhesive, grout, trims and movement-joint details.
• Check delivery access, safe unloading and secure on-site storage.
